Department of Labour First Aid - Level 1

This course is designed as minimum requirements and a standard for First Aid for the Department of Labour - Document C

Duration
18 hours including evaluations
Purpose

To enable employers to train employees as First Aiders for compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993)

Minimum entry

None

Course content - Level 1
  1. Introduction to First Aid
  2. Casualty management: shock, unconsciousness, fainting
  3. Casualty management: responsive suspected spinal injury
  4. Adult and child resuscitation
  5. Severe bleeding
  6. Medical conditions
  7. Secondary survey
  8. Wound care
  9. Burns
  10. Bone and joint injuries
  11. Multiple casualty management
Department of Labour First Aid - Levels 2 and 3
Learner must have a valid First Aid - Level 1 certificate
Duration
42 hours including evaluation
Purpose
To train First Aiders as First Aid Team Leaders to operate in high risk situations requiring higher levels of first aid skill
Minimum entry
Grade 9 (Standard 7) education level or equivalent, plus a valid Level 1 First Aid certificate
Course content - Level 2 (Level 1 lessons plus)
  1. Rescue carries
  2. Chest injuries
  3. Poisoning
  4. Eye injuries
  5. Heat and cold injuries
  6. Two Rescuer CPR
Course content - Level 3 (includes Level 1 and 2 lessons)
  1. Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  2. Infant CPR and choking
  3. Emergency child birth
Note: Each level will cover basic anatomy and physiology as necessaryaccording to each topic
