It is with incredible shock and profound sadness that we learnt early this morning of the burglary and alleged murder of two residents of the St John – Stella Londt Retirement Home. The impact to the families of the deceased, residents and staff, and the wider St John Community is substantial.

Our country faces alarming levels of violent crime, particularly against women and those most vulnerable in our communities. The events of the last 24 hours are a sad reminder of the enormous and symptomatic challenges facing all South Africans.

Whilst we attempt to process this tragic news, the management of Stella Londt and the Order of St John acknowledge that the safety and well-being of our residents and staff is of paramount importance. To this end, we are working closely with the local police and our security provider to establish the facts pertaining to this heinous crime.

Our thoughts and support go to all those affected by this tragic event.

May God be present and may we know his peace and comfort in our time of need.

The Most Revd Dr Thabo Makgoba, Archbishop of Cape Town
Prior of the Order of St John, South Africa.
