We were privileged to welcome the St John Hospitaller, David Verity as part of an official visit to the South African Priory as well as key St John facilities. David, a hugely accomplished ophthalmic surgeon in his own right, also visited SA in his capacity as Chairman of the St John Ophthalmic Association (SOA), a collective of clinicians, nurses, managers, and IT and healthcare professionals from across the world, with the purpose of coordinating the post-graduate ophthalmic activities of the Order of St John.

The SOA African Chapter held its second annual meeting on Sunday, 03 November at the Mt Grace Hotel.

Some key highlights of Mr Verity’s visit included:

  • Visiting the current St John Eye Hospital in Soweto and consulting on some specific cases there
  • Meeting with key stakeholders involved with the planning and development of the new St John Eye Hospital set to begin construction in 2020
  • Visiting the St John Lambano Children’s Sanctuary, St John’s paediatric stepdown facility which provides care to children with life-limiting diseases.

The trip was a great success and emphasised the value of having support from high calibre, international thought leaders.
